Course Description: The goal of the Intensive Elementary Spanish program is to develop proficiency in Spanish. Students are expected to learn to use Spanish for communication in real, meaningful situations. It is also intended that students develop an understanding of basic grammatical concepts and an appreciation of all the different cultures of the Spanish speaking world.
Functions include:
Greetings, descriptions of self and others, daily activities, preferences, communicating about professions, class activities, neighborhood and housing, past experiences, food preferences, family relationships, childhood experiences, travel plans, clothing, giving instructions to peers and elders, and talking about the future.
Grammatical structures presented include:
Present indicative, present progressive tenses, reflexive verbs, stem-changing verbs, object pronouns, the preterit tense, imperfect tense, present subjunctive, the perfect tenses, and formal and informal commands.
Prerequisite: Not open to students who have completed equivalent courses SPA 001, 001S, 002, 002S, 002V, 002Y, 003, 003S, 003V or 003Y.

Course Description: Introduction to Spanish grammar and development of all language skills in a cultural context with special emphasis on communication. Functions include: greetings, descriptions of self and others, daily activities, and preferences. Major grammatical structures presented include: the present indicative and the present progressive tenses, reflexive verbs and stem-changing verbs. Not open for credit for students who have completed equivalent course 001S. Students who have successfully completed Spanish 002 or 003 in the 10th or higher grade of high school may receive unit credit for this course on a P/NP grading basis only. Although a passing grade will be charged to the student's P/NP option, no petition is required. All other students will receive a letter grade unless a P/NP petition is filed.

Course Description: This course explores the intersectionality of gender and race in the construction of identity in Latin America in textual and audiovisual narratives from the 16th century to the present. Students will analyze diverse cultural productions, including literary crónicas, essays, short stories, poetry, photography, films and popular music, paying particular attention to different racialization discourses from the colonial encounter, to mestizaje, indigenismo, diversity and multiculturalism. Related topics to consider may include colonialism, displacement, migration, belonging, and decolonization.
A main topic will be covered each week. Each session will include one or two primary texts in dialogue, and some videos or films in class.
Prerequisite: Any one of the following Spanish courses, SPA 100/100S, SPA 141/141S, or SPA 170/170S.
