Statement of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese promotes undergraduate and graduate education that fosters cross-cultural understanding, equity, and human rights for all. We strive to provide a safe space for learning, research, and public engagement across national, linguistic, and ideological borders.

In line with UC Davis’s Principles of Community, we seek to ensure an atmosphere of inclusivity and care for all students, staff and faculty. We endeavor to deliver a culturally aware curriculum that opposes all forms of bigotry and discrimination enacted against people for their race, ethnicity, skin color, sex, sexuality, gender identity, religion, nationality, migratory status, age, ability, dialect, or political affiliation, while also incorporating forms of knowledge that reflect the diversity of epistemologies across the Spanish and Portuguese speaking worlds.

As UC Davis transitions to becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution, we are committed to serving the needs of our Latinx students. Guided by the principles of language justice, we strive to respect the many linguistic variations of Spanish and Portuguese, including those of immigrant and heritage speaker populations of California and the rest of the US, and to honor the preferred pronouns and forms of identification across the spectrum of gender diversity. Furthermore, we enthusiastically endorse campus priorities for global engagement by welcoming a diverse range of international students to campus, and supporting their needs.
